The 20’s can be a tumultuous time. It’s when you’re in college figuring out who you want to be and what you want to do. You start first jobs, first serious relationships and first serious heart breaks. It’s also a period of transitioning from childhood to adulthood. And all this can show up on your face.
Did you know that your skincare routine in your 20’s sets the stage for how your skin ages for the rest of your life? It’s such an important time because your habits can either damage or protect your skin for the long-term.
As part of the Decade by Decade series, I will walk you through the best ways to take care of your skin for each decade of your life from age 20 to 40. If you need a refresher for how the skin aging process works, read my Decade by Decade: The Skin Aging Process blog.
Take these daily maintenance measures to protect and nourish your skin as you age from your 20’s.
Use Sun Protection
I put this bit of advice at the top for a reason—it is possibly the most important factor to protecting your skin and health. Sun damage produces fine lines and wrinkles early on that only get worse. In the worst-case scenario, you could get skin cancer. Find an oil-free, chemical-free sunscreen and wear it every day.

Eat a Healthy Diet
It’s true that what’s on the inside reflects on the outside. Unhealthy eating causes more than inflammation and acne—it can permanently damage your skin. Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables while leaving out toxins like what you can find in fast food. Make sure to drink plenty of water too. Staying hydrated is another key to maintaining beautiful skin.
Use a Gentle Cleanser
Even if you don’t wear makeup, cleansing your face every day is vital because it unclogs the pores and removes dirt, dead skin and pollutants. Find a good cleanser that doesn’t strip the skin of moisture.

Always, always, always moisturize after washing your face. Moisturizing prevents fine lines and wrinkles. Plus, if you don’t moisturize, your skin could become flaky, dry or dull. Use a product with hyaluronic acid. This ingredient defies aging by keeping your skin hydrated and plump.

Use a Gentle Exfoliant with Retinol
Use a gentle exfoliant two times a week to remove dead skin cells. This helps keep your pores clear, which keeps your skin happy for the short and long-term. Your skin will appear more vibrant and radiant immediately after exfoliating.

Get Quarterly Seasonal Facials
Start a relationship with a licensed esthetician in your 20’s to have them on your side for the rest of your life. Not only will they keep your skin radiant and healthy, they will also help you spot potential skin problems you need to be on the lookout for.
Finally, have some fun! Stressing too much causes damage to your skin and body. It’s your 20’s. Enjoy life and find time to relax. Your skin and overall health will thank you.
