How to Avoid Travel Breakouts

15 Dec

winter travel blogAs the holidays approach, how to avoid travel breakouts is on many of our minds. Believe me, I know that vacation is all fun and full of selfies until that first breakout appears. Even if you aren’t normally acne-prone, travel can bring out the worst in your skin.

Luckily, there are some tricks you can use to minimize those travel breakouts. First, let’s talk about why travel can cause acne.

Why Do We Breakout More When We Travel?

Stress

The main reason is stress. Travel, while fun, can be stressful. I personally have to do a little extra meditation to calm myself before entering the airport. Stress affects our hormones, which—you guessed it—can cause breakouts.

Moisture Loss

Flights can cause some major travel breakouts. The low humidity on airplanes dries out the skin, causing oil glands to go into overdrive. The oil then clogs the pores, causing pimples to appear.

Rapid Temperature and Humidity Changes

Traveling from one area to the next exposes your skin to vastly different temperatures and humidity, which upsets your skin’s natural balance. Your skin tries to compensate for these sudden changes and may become too dry or oily, both of which make you more prone to breakouts.

How to Avoid Travel Breakouts

Exfoliate the Night Before

The night before you leave, use an exfoliant. It will unclog your pores and resurface the skin to get it ready for your trip.

Hydrate

I cannot stress enough how important it is to keep your body and skin hydrated, especially if you are traveling to a cold or dry climate like Aspen. That means drinking plenty of water and using hydrating serums and moisturizers.

Use Acne Preventing Products

Find products that use pimple-fighting ingredients glycolic and salicylic acids to treat any problem areas and prevent future breakouts.

Don’t Use Hotel Soap on Your Face

It may seem tempting to forgo your skincare products to make room in your bag, but hotel soap can be detrimental to your skin. Leave a little extra room in your bag for the cleansers and moisturizers that you know work for you. Your skin will thank you.
