We get it: even the word “facial” probably conjures up images of fluffy robes and matching slippers, of unbearable spa music, hushed tones and the kind of frivolous indulgence typically reserved for overindulged housewives.

Here’s the thing—men need to take care of their skin just as much, if not more than women do. It’s kind of like changing the oil in your car. The longer you neglect regular maintenance, the more it’s going to take its toll in the long run.

Here are a few reasons why men need regular skincare: Men have higher testosterone levels. Therefore, skin is more prone to be oily, which can cause clogged pores, blackheads, breakouts, and uneven skin tone. Regular skincare treatments (just in case you really can’t stomach the word “facial”) will help control oil production, which can cause other undesirable problems if left untreated, such as scarring and uneven texture. During a facial (oh, just get over it already) the esthetician will perform extractions to rid the skin of impurities and unclog pores without doing any further damage (in other words, do not try this at home).

Regular shaving irritates the skin.
Ever hear of a little thing called razor burn? We’re pretty sure you’ve probably experienced it. Regular shaving can cause a whole slew of skin problems, from irritation and inflammation to bumps and breakouts. A facial will typically include masks, essential oils, exfoliation and moisturizers to deep clean and bring balance back into your skin to make it smoother. Smoother skin means a better shave. And trust us when we tell you an esthetician is going to take the time and care to do this job like you never could. Oh, and as an added bonus, it helps eliminate wrinkles too. (Even though you may pretend not to care about them, we know you do).

You’ll get a clue.
Let’s face it: Guys are pretty clueless when it comes to skincare products. We’re guessing many of you probably use, what, your shower gel (Irish Spring, perhaps?) to wash your face. Over the counter products and products that aren’t intended for the face can be very drying and irritating, doing more harm than good over time. Your esthetician can teach you a thing or two about what products to use and help come up with a daily regimen that’s sensible, and better yet, effective.

Don’t worry: we won’t tell anyone.
Heaven on Earth is a small, private spa where we focus on individual, customized, one-on-one care: no groups of women padding around in white robes with towels on their heads and cucumbers on their eyes. It’s very private and relatively discreet so the focus is on you and your specific skincare needs.

Pila Recommends:

The Ajax Facial for Men
60 minutes, $140

Chances are you probably have no clue what your skincare needs are. That’s why we’ve designed our male-specific facial, a totally customizable 60-minute treatment that will assess and then address your individual needs. We’ll determine your skin type and come up with an effective treatment that will also be soothing, relaxing and (it’s OK to admit this) pretty darn enjoyable. Light massage to shoulders, neck, and arms is included.
