Do I Need a Toner? The Step You Might Be Missing

Pila Xian

Aspen Esthetician Pila Xian has her own thoughts on the question: "Do I need a toner?"

So, I was listening to a skincare podcast the other day, and the esthetician made a bold claim: toners are unnecessary. Her reasoning? Modern cleansers don't disrupt the skin's pH like they used to, so there's no need for a toner to rebalance it.

Now, as an esthetician myself, this definitely piqued my interest! And this got me thinking – do I need a toner? Are toners really necessary? Or is it just another product taking up space on our bathroom shelves?

The Case Against Toner

The esthetician on the podcast had a valid point. Traditional toners were often harsh, alcohol-based solutions designed to strip oil and "clarify" the skin. Thankfully, those days are largely gone. Many cleansers today are formulated to be gentle and pH-balanced, meaning they cleanse effectively without disrupting the skin's natural barrier. So, the old-school purpose of toner – rebalancing pH – might be obsolete for some.

Why I Still Love Toner (Most Days)

Here's the thing: toners have evolved. They're not just about correcting your skin's pH any more. Think of them as a lightweight treatment essence that delivers a concentrated dose of beneficial and active ingredients. My favorite toners are packed with:

  • Hydrating heroes: Hyaluronic acid, glycerin, and aloe vera to boost moisture levels.
  • Soothing superstars: Chamomile, Centella Asiatica, and green tea to calm inflammation and redness.
  • Glow-getters: Niacinamide, vitamin C, and AHAs to brighten and even out skin tone.

Toning offers a fantastic opportunity to customize your skincare routine and address specific concerns. Need extra hydration? There's a toner for that. Want to minimize pores? A toner can help. Dealing with breakouts? Losing volume in your skin? You guessed it—there are toners for that, too!

Finding Your Match

If you're considering adding a toner to your routine, here are a few things to keep in mind:

  • Skin Type Matters: Choose one formulated for your skin type and concerns.
  • Ingredient Focus: Look for toners with ingredients that address your needs, whether hydration, brightening, or soothing.
  • Gentle is Key: Avoid harsh, alcohol-based formulas that can strip the skin and cause irritation.

The Verdict

Whether or not you need a toner depends on your skin's needs and preferences. If you're happy with your current routine and don't feel like your skin is missing anything, then skipping toner is totally fine.

But if you're looking to:

  • Boost hydration
  • Address specific skin concerns
  • Add an extra layer of nourishment
  • Prep your skin for serums and moisturizers

...then a well-formulated toner can be a valuable addition to your skincare arsenal.

Just remember

  • Choose a toner that will address your skin concerns.
  • Avoid harsh, alcohol-based formulas.
  • Don't overdo it. Once a day, usually after cleansing, is enough.

And hey, if you forget to tone occasionally, don't stress! Your skin will probably forgive you. So, if you've been wondering "Do I need a toner", now you can decide for yourself if this step is necessary or not. While I agree that cleansers have come a long way, toners still have a place in many skincare routines (including my own!).
